Asparagus setaceus (Asparagus fern)
Asparagus setaceus (Asparagus fern)
Also known as: Lace fern, Ferny asparagus, Asparagus setaceus
Asparagus ferns are named after asparagus seedlings. They are not edible and prefer to not be roasted or made into a soup so don't even try it. These plants are great for sunless rooms and forgetful plant parents. Bathrooms, hallways and darker corners are good for these dudes. Go ahead Elizabeth, put this plant in your dimly lit bathroom. Water when dry and feed monthly for the best growth. Do not expose to bright light or it will shrivel up like... something shrively.
Light: Bright, indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight may scorch the needles, whereas insufficient light may turn them yellow and cause them to drop.
Water: Keep well-watered, but do not allow to stand in water. Less water is required during the winter but don’t let the soil dry out completely.
Temperature: Normal warm household temperatures. Needs a minimum of 13°C in winter.
Humidity: Mist to improve humidity when grown indoors.
Feed: Feed with a weak solution during the growing season.
Care Tips: Due to their vigorous growth habit, Asparagus setaceus may become pot bound. If required, re-pot during springtime. Trim in winter/early spring to maintain desired size and shape. Thorns can be sharp so take care when handling.
Height and Growth Rate: Up to 1m. Asparagus are fast growing.
Toxicity: The berries are inedible. May cause skin irritation.
Origin: Southern Africa.
